The United Nations adopts an agreement on the protection of biodiversity on the high seas

[United Nations Adoption of an Agreement on the Protection of Biodiversity on the High Seas] the United Nations adopted an agreement in New York on June 19, local time, to protect and sustainably use the biodiversity of more than 2/3 of the oceans-areas beyond national jurisdiction. United Nations Secretary-General Guterres says the adoption of the agreement shows the power of multilateralism. This agreement, based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, provides an important framework for cross-sectoral cooperation between States and other stakeholders to promote the sustainable development of the oceans and their resources, and to address the multifaceted pressures facing the oceans. The United Nations believes that the effective and timely implementation of the Agreement will make an important contribution to the achievement of the ocean-related goals and targets in the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
