[Sweden proposes extension of coal power subsidies to disturb EU energy reform plan]-EU energy ministers met in Luxembourg on June 19 local time to reach a common position on the new rules of the EU electricity market. The proposed reforms aim to make electricity prices more stable and predictable by incorporating state-supported new renewable energy and low-carbon nuclear power plants into fixed-price contracts for difference. However, Sweden, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, recently put forward a proposal to allow countries to extend capacity subsidies for coal-fired power plants. Sweden believes that coal-fired power plants should keep sufficient generating capacity on standby to avoid power outages. Under the proposal, it could extend its support for coal-fired power plants beyond 2025.
