FYN, Friday (local time)-- streaming media giants Netflix, Amazon and Disney privately discussed potential legal challenges to prevent India's new tobacco warning rules from coming into effect. As part of India's anti-tobacco campaign, the country's Ministry of Health this week gave streaming platforms three months to insert static health warnings into smoking scenes. In addition, India wants at least 50 seconds of anti-tobacco disclaimer at the beginning and middle of each program. The three streaming giants are reported to have held closed-door meetings with executives of Indian broadcaster Viacom18, saying the new rules of India's Ministry of Health will disrupt the user experience and cause production companies to block their content in India. In addition, executives discussed possible legal challenges, arguing that only other departments, such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, have the power to exert power over streaming media giants, not the Ministry of Health.
