FAP, May 31 (Xinhua)-- recently, US scientists released a report in Science that the El Ni ñ o phenomenon is expected to reappear this year and will cause trillions of dollars in economic losses worldwide. This study is one of the first studies to assess the long-term loss of El Ni ñ o, which is much higher than previous studies. El Ni ñ o has a far-reaching impact on climate change, which can cause devastating floods and droughts, resulting in crop deaths, a decline in fish stocks and an increase in tropical diseases. The researchers predict that global economic losses will reach $84 trillion in the 21st century, given that climate change is likely to increase the frequency and intensity of El Ni ñ o, even if the world's commitment to reduce carbon emissions becomes a reality. They estimate that by 2029, the 2023 El Ni ñ o alone could cause $3 trillion in damage to the global economy.
