Department of Defense: urge the United States to show sincerity in implementing the contract and step up efforts to destroy stockpiles of chemical weapons

FIFA, 29 May (FIFA)-- the Ministry of Defense held a regular press conference on the afternoon of 29 May, and Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense, answered a reporter's question. Reporter: the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical weapons Convention (CWC) was recently held in the Hague, the Netherlands. The United States says it plans to complete the destruction of its chemical weapons stockpiles by this autumn. Does the spokesman have any comments? Tan Kefei: the Chemical weapons Convention is an important pillar of global security governance. The destruction of chemical weapons is the core objective of the Convention and the primary obligation of States parties. In accordance with the provisions of the Convention, the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles should be completed within 10 years after the entry into force of the Convention in 1997, and the destruction of chemical weapons has been repeatedly postponed, seriously hindering the realization of the lofty goal of "a world without chemical weapons" under the Convention. In the 26 years since the entry into force of the Convention, more than 99 per cent of the world's stockpiles of chemical weapons have been destroyed; seven of the eight countries that have declared stockpiles of chemical weapons have been destroyed. The United States is the only country that still has a stockpile of chemical weapons. The Chinese side hopes that the US side will honor its relevant commitments and demonstrate its sincerity in implementing the agreement with practical actions. At the same time, in sharp contrast to the near completion of the destruction of chemical weapons in the global stockpile, the destruction process of chemical weapons abandoned by Japan in China has seriously lagged behind, and the destruction plan has been overdue many times. China urges the Japanese side to enhance its sense of urgency, increase investment and eliminate the poison of Japanese chemical weapons at an early, clean and complete date. China hopes that the OPCW and the international community will step up supervision and verification of the issue of chemical weapons left by Japan, promote the acceleration of the destruction process, and clear the way for building a "world free of chemical weapons."
