Republican conservatives pressure McCarthy to make excessive concessions or lose the Speaker's seat

FAP, May 25 (Xinhua)-- conservative members of the US House of Representatives have stepped up pressure on Speaker McCarthy to maintain a tough stance in the debt ceiling negotiations. Texas Congressman Chip Roy wrote to other Republicans urging them to join McCarthy in demanding that raising the debt ceiling must be conditional on big government spending cuts. He said the bill to raise the debt ceiling passed by the House of Representatives last month was crucial and should not be abandoned just to "reach an agreement." Although the debt ceiling deal can pass the House of Representatives without conservative support, McCarthy could be ousted from the Speaker's seat if it does upset conservatives. This is a problem for McCarthy. Roy has called the so-called debt ceiling "creating a crisis". So far, McCarthy has not disclosed any of the compromises he has proposed. (Bloomberg)
