(European "vegetable basket") drought and water shortage in Spain may worsen inflation in many European countries. FAP, May 8, due to the continuous drought, the water level of rivers in many parts of Spain has been falling, and land desertification has intensified. At present, the Spanish government is caught in a dilemma between protecting the local ecological environment and maintaining regional agricultural development and ensuring the supply of European agricultural products. According to data from local agricultural organizations, reducing water supply could lead to the abandonment of more than 12000 hectares of local arable land, resulting in an annual economic loss of 137 million euros and the loss of 15000 jobs. According to data provided by Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transformation, rainfall in Spain has been below average for 36 consecutive months. At the same time, 3/4 of Spain is at risk of desertification. If the drought is not alleviated, agricultural irrigation in Spain will be more difficult, which will also threaten the supply of vegetables and fruits to the European Union, thus further exacerbating inflation in parts of Europe.
